Back in Canada

Sault Ste. Marie to Blind River, 80 nautical miles

And so our intrepid adventure continues! Peter and Carl volunteered to do the early shift, getting up at 4.30 and casting off at 5 o'clock, allowing the other shipmates to have an extended kip.

It was incredibly damp and cold, something that perhaps we should have become accustomed to by now. And there was certainly no opportunity to switch on the auto-pilot and duck below to warm up: the shipping channel is extremely narrow with water on either side just a few inches deep. It was nice though to have a change of scenery. A couple of deer followed us along the shore of West Neebish Channel.

However, when Greg and Theyre took over they had something slightly larger than deer to contend with. Two freighters, one US flag, the other Canadian, rapidly caught Prozac up in the downbound channel at a point where there is no room for overtaking. They both slowed down until a wider stretch of Mary River allowed them to pass, one on either side. The US-flag ship acknowledged Prozac eith a friendly blast on the whistle.

Turning off into the North Channel, the weather changed... again! From wearing multiple layers of clothes and still not keeping warm to wandering the deck in shorts and tee-shirts. Only in Canada!

However the wind was not kind to us - mostly straight on the nose and weak. Whenever it swung around, disturbed by the islands, we hoisted the genoa but with little effect. At one point we stopped the engine and put up the main and spinnaker (a lesson now learnt), very pretty but the most we could get out of her was 4 knots - in the wrong direction!

So, back to basking in the sun. As this is being written we are about an hour away from our next stop at Blind River for an overnight stop. We will report on our experiences there tomorrow...
