Anyone following our blog and checking the Roy’s Point Marina live webcam will realize that we are still here! Heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning through last night convinced our most experienced sailors, Carl and Greg, that we really didn’t need to give Gordon Lightfoot any more material. That last night was a three martini lunch kind of night had nothing to do with the decision – honest!
Today’s forecast called for heavy winds and a good chance of thundershowers turning to near gale force winds in the afternoon. All of this is to die down later this evening and Saturday’s forecast is for good southerly winds and happy sailing.
Unlike Montreal, the forecasts here don’t seem to have a lot to do with reality. To be fair, Montreal’s are rarely right but at least the day looks like they could happen! We spent the day looking for all of the signs that told us we should be on shore but enjoyed sunshine and warm temperatures for most of the day. Our marina hosts and some of the locals assured us that we really didn’t want to be out there but, we figure someone was having us on.
Our day was filled with landlubber chores – re-arranging all the gear on the boat, showers and a bit of laundry – and a few minor catastrophes – cooking breakfast only to find that we had run out of propane (only to find out later that we were a bit equipment challenged) and looking for an inclinometer only to find that no-one in the greater Bayfield marina industry had a clue what we were talking about.
With great thanks to Mike, the manager at Roy’s Point Marina and another marina member family, we had the use of cars to get out and about on our re-supply missions, laundry runs and various errands. Thanks to Chuck we had our much needed wireless computer hookup. In the course of these errands we learned once again just how much cheaper everything is down here. $45 worth of groceries that would have cost $60 at home etc etc.
From the warm, friendly helpfulness that we are learning is a Wisconsin hallmark, we successfully topped up much needed fluids and food and got a wealth of new knowledge on sailing these waters.
Carl is busy loading up our navigation equipment for our pending departure. As the weather is finally changing for the better, the current plan is for a very early morning start for the next – er, first – leg of our great sailing adventure.
And so, friends and blog followers, we bid you adieu for another day with the fervent hope that you won’t find us on the webcam soon!
Eager to sail!
